Carter" Subject: New publisher -- iuniverse MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Yesterday at Barnes and Noble I saw a big sign in the window for www.iuniverse.com. which B&N has just bought about half of. It's a new print-on-demand publisher. They charge the author money (though only $99 for members of their "club" -- I didn't check in detail to find out the conditions for becoming a member), so it's essentially a self-publishing service. And they do seem to me to ask the author to do an awful lot of work in the preliminary formatting, considering that the author has to pay up front. OTOH, the books will be available through Ingram's and Barnes & Noble and, I assume, heavily hyped by B&N. And on the third hand, they do supply some sort of "template" that is supposed to make the formatting easier. The author's percentage of the take (I'm not sure I would technically call this a "royalty") is 50%. As far as I can tell, for previously published OOP books they do NOT charge the author any money. So this might be a good outlet for some of the OOP Sime~Gen books, if you don't want to keep all your eggs in the Bibliobyte basket. I'm vaguely thinking I might like to have my vampire bibliography reprinted that way eventually. Individual passages of text can't be altered, but whole discrete chunks can be deleted or added. So I could append several pages of errata, making the book more usable to readers than the original edition (which is officially OOP but is currently being sold "on demand" by UMI at a very high price -- I'm sure this iuniverse site will be selling books a lot cheaper). One catch is that you have to provide 2 copies of the original book, which don't get returned to you. So I would have to get UMI to sell me 2 Books-on-Demand copies, since I'm not about to give up my 2 remaining ones! Oh, well, it's not as if I'm going to rush into this. The clerk at B&N was very enthusiastic about this venture and plans to have her own time travel romance published that way. I didn't have the heart to mention the one serious problem for ORIGINAL books (as opposed to reprints) published this way. Everybody will know that iuniverse is a self-publishing venue and that the books essentially haven't been edited. So they probably won't be eligible for awards and will be viewed with a grain of salt by reviewers. Unless the clout of Barnes and Noble lends them some measure of status. I am taking a "wait and see" stance for the moment. Goodness knows, this outfit and others such as Hyperbooks (which doesn't charge at all, aside from a monthly membership fee of something like a dollar, but simply splits the take with the author -- and after the first year, the author doesn't even have to share with the site owner anymore) are very tempting. I have a nonfiction book on vampire lit that has been sitting for several years at a publisher who gave me an informal acceptance (and whom I do like and trust) but hasn't yet produced a contract. In contrast, publishing it myself would give instant gratification. LL&P, Margaret Carter ---------- You are subscribed to the SIMEGEN-L list. They were unedited, and while I've paid money for worse books, they weren't great either. Still, he received glowing letters from his contact at iU praising his prowess and encouraging him, and somehow the $99/book ended up being $450/book. The $99 offer gets you print-on-demand of books ordered through iUniverse only, but it costs more to get the book listed with Ingrams and Books in Print. There are also additional charges for correcting errors, etc. that add up. iUniverse has several pricing programs that offer different benefits, see http://www.iuniverse.com/publish/pubProgramCompareChart.html?. The royalty varies per program, but is 50% for electronic copies, and 20% for print in most programs. As a former paralegal and contract analyst, I can say that iUniverse makes absolutely no commitment regarding marketing the book, see http://www.iuniverse.com/bniu/faqbnprogram.asp#5 for details. They say that your book will "be available for order at more than 5000 bookstores" and that some top selling books MAY be featured at CERTAIN B&N Superstores. In other words, if you self market the book into popularity, they'll jump on the bandwagon. My dad will feel his dream of being a "published author" has come true, and after all his friends and relatives have bought a copy he may sell 100 books or so and the library will probably buy a copy to put on their "local author" shelf. He was hurt by the repeated rejection slips, and he truly believes that with two "published" books under his belt, editors and agents will take him seriously. I'm afraid they still won't give him the time of day. I worry that this amounts to nothing more than another scam to separate the gullible from their money. I'd really appreciate hearing other people's thoughts about this. Thanks, Michelle ---------- You are subscribed to the SIMEGEN-L list. It will also be formatted for use in handheld devices such as Palm Pilots. A free excerpt is already available on the site. It starts: "I've never told anyone this story, and never thought I would - not because I was afraid of being disbelieved, exactly, but because I was ashamed... and because it was mine." Chilling. King, whose classics include The Shining and Misery, said he was curious to see what sort of response the Web venture would get. Riding The Bullet is said to be based on an incident in the 52-year-old author's own life. Last June, a runaway van crashed into King when he was out walking, leaving him semi-conscious in a ditch. Sitting around airports for hours yesterday, being redirected through Cincinnati to get to Orlando from Nashville, I naturally began to think in Sime~Gen terms. What if Simes on flights that were supposed to go from one in-T airport to another in-T airport got redirected onto flights that made connections at out-T airports? So Bru and Reeon, the Gen~renSime transfer mates (I've explained in earlier posts how Digen Farris, who is Reeon amrov Dar's second or third cousin, has arranged the special dispensation of direct transfer for this sensitive renSime who was slowly dying on channel's transfer), began to tell me about the time something on that order happened to them. For some reason Reeon was the only Sime on the flight, which was forced down by storms while they were flying over Gen Territory. Air travel at this time would probably be at about the level of the 1950's, mostly prop planes carrying 20-30 passengers. The crew radios ahead, explaining the situation. Upon landing, Reeon is confined along with Bru in a secure waiting area until the plane can continue its journey. A number of other Gens from Gulf Territory stay with them, sharing stories about the paranoia of out-T Gens. The situation is a mere inconvenience, an annoyance--until a tornado hits the airport. The terminal is smashed. Injured people are everywhere. There is an ordinary First Aid station at the airport staffed by a nurse and an aide, no doctor anywhere nearby. The nearest Sime Center, which might send a channel if the local government allowed, is miles away. The Logan Gens, none with more than scratches and bruises, throw themselves into helping the injured, Reeon zlinning for them (Simes--handy dandy portable x-ray machines), Bru doing his best to shield him from the pain. Reeon, remember, is renSime, not channel. He is nonjunct, not disjunct. He has spent his life in the Tecton, routinely protected, like any renSime, from situations that could potentially trigger killmode. He does, however, have Dar discipline and martial arts training. So he manages to hold himself together and do what has to be done in this emergency, leaning nagerically on his matchmate in order to zlin Gen pain without being affected by it. And then they find a victim with a ruptured spleen, bleeding to death internally. There seems to be nothing they can do about it without a channel. But...all the in-T people know _how_ a channel would stop that bleeding: put his laterals over the injury, and project need in his show-field. But not being a channel, Reeon has no show-field except his real field. He's not in need--it's still a couple of days before his turnover. However...he is surrounded by Logan Gens. Do you recall what these Gens can do? Everything Tonyo Logan figured out how to do, and more. Tonyo was capable of making an auditorium of Simes feel need, intil, satiation, post-syndrome, all in an evening's performance and all no matter where those Simes were in their cycles. And when the performance was over, he returned everyone safely to equilibrium. So Bru realizes...he can cause Reeon, who is his matchmate, to feel hard need, so that his field will induce selyn production, and thus healing, in the injured Gen. But in order to do so, Bru has to put Reeon through an emotional wringer. He must also _deny_ his own selyn to his matchmate, become nagerically invisible to him so that Reeon will focus his need on the Gen to be healed, not on Bru. Bru makes sure that Reeon understands what is at stake--or thinks he does. Both of them are intent on saving a life, which they do. But the emotional repercussions will be devastating. They are not channel and Companion--they haven't the training or experience to deal with Reeon's loss of trust in his transfer-mate, brought on by the cognitive dissonance of seeing his matchmate there at his side, while zlinning his nageric absence. And someday, when I have the time, therein lies a tale! Jean All opinions expressed in this post are my own unless otherwise indicated. Well, at the moment I have three complete Zhag~Tonyo stories. One more, and that collection will be the length of a short novel--and I intend to write another one before WorldCon. At that point, I plan to consult with Jacqueline, and see about offering the collection of stories as an e-book to one of the publishers of sf on the Internet. I wish I had more time to write! There are so many, many stories I want to tell. I have a fair idea of what will happen in the new Z~T story, which is Tonyo's test, corresponding to the test Zhag faced in last year's story. And of course Bru and Reeon keep pestering me to write a whole book about them. *Sigh* Maybe after we get simegen.com more or less operating smoothly. I also picked up Katie Wakeman's new book, "The Divided" although I haven't had a chance to read it yet. Her book, "The Merro Tree" is one of my all time favorites. I've been reading gardening books instead because in Ohio last-frost is 6-8 weeks away and it's time to start the seeds so we'll have veggies this summer. If I wrote a S~G story, that would be the setting, not only because I like it, but because it doesn't require the highly technical transfer terminology. I think one reason I prefer that period is that it has a soft-SF/fantasy atmosphere rather than a hard-SF atmosphere. Also, I love the structure of the Households at that time, with a strong, personal, quasi-feudal loyalty to the Sectuib. And I do enjoy reading those transfer descriptions! I finished my paper for the IAFA con, including cutting it to the proper size, a couple of weeks ago. That was a great relief. This is the first time I've written a paper esp. for a conference, rather than adapting a piece already written. And it STILL came out too long in the first draft. Guess I just don't know when to shut up. I was a little anxious for fear I couldn't produce something decent "from scratch," but I'm pretty happy with the result. I had some second thoughts about which section of my novel to read in the author reading session, but I finally decided to go with my original choice, even if it has a few flaws (nothing is perfect, anyway -- however, why do I see some of the flaws only AFTER the thing is in print?). This kind of thing happened a lot at various levels of tech development throughout the reconstruction period -- and it is where the overall reputation of the Tecton comes from -- the reputation for absolute incorruptibility, total dedication to not-killing. However, Jean has ended off the description of this situation just shy of the really torturous and horrifying results. It's not just the shell-shock of being denied by his matchmate that causes problems. What the pair lacks is the physiological (mutated) basis for dealing with this type of stress. It takes its toll on the body, and to a degree that total recovery will never happen, and life will be shortened by the underlying damage. Worse, when the media get hold of the story, of COURSE there will be lots of kids everywhere trying to copy-cat this grandstand stunt. A few will succeed because they are un-identified channel/donor teams -- but do you think the media will emphasize that? Or if they do, will other kids believe the news stories? Will they believe the Logan Gens are anything special? One really nice side-effect of all that publicity is that it takes the heat off the current Farris-syndrom sufferer, directing attention away from the Farris-of-the-hour. What a relief! But what a PRICETAG on that short respit. Oh, I could do this all day. We could write a novel or three. Master and Servant is -really- medieval, but then they don't have the tech base anymore. (The sheer time I've spent with that world trying to figure out what people wear, for example, is astonishing) Which is interesting as Master and Servant is pure, hard SF and my S~G is very much Science Fantasy. Very different worlds. (just went back to M&S and realized how shockingly different it is ... all the way down to the very style I use changing between the two worlds) I also like not having to get all the fancy terminology right and the closer relationships allowed by the pre-Techton era, and in many cases, encouraged. Although one piece I still have on the spike is set way early in the west, at the time of the founding of the first territory. For other people's S~G writing, I really like the space age stuff. I think there is a lot of room for expansion in that era, as it can focus more on the people and less on the technicalities of S~G explicitly. Will they believe the >Logan Gens are anything special? > That seems to be one of the recurring issues of the Tecton-era stories -- how does society deal with exceptional individuals while maintaining the social order necessary to keep a large state-level civilization running? Sometimes it seems that large-scale societies are set up such that they would work best if everybody were identical, interchangable clones. Part of it may be that it's *easier* to simply make blanket rules -- it doesn't take any thinking to apply them. Also, especially in the larger and more impersonal social organizations of a state-level civilization, there is a fear that allowing any exceptions to the rules, even for people who genuinely *are* exceptional, will instead produce a stampeed of poseurs who will gobble up the special priveleges and abuse them, leaving nothing for those who genuinely require those special priveleges and actually make things worse by turning public opinion against them. Then there's the issue of people's response to things they see on the media -- even here and now, no matter how many warnings and disclaimers you include that the people on the TV show are trained professional and you shouldn't try it at home, there's always some dumbass who promptly runs out and tries it and gets hurt badly, or worse yet, badly hurts some innocent bystander. Not to mention the issue of the ethics of risky heroics in emergency situations -- is it better to do something to help and risk making things worse, or should one sit on one's hands and "let nature take its course," even if it means that people will die who otherwise might have been saved? -- One terrified boy and the girl who would save him. The thing is I would say nearly any broad theme could be shown in nearly any fully developed universe. Until you get way out on the fringes, where you are no longer dealing with human concepts, which tends to be a bit too surreal for most reader's tastes, very broad themes, like the ones I mentioned, are universal to the human condition. The fashion for a while was to pare down created universes so that they did not span the human condition, but that fashion is dead. >(I feel the same way about a couple of the later Pern books, before I >stopped reading them altogether. No, I could use anything from Ancient China (circa 4-5000 BCE) through Leiber's "Bucketfull of Air". (I think that's who wrote it) It is a fundamental theme for humans. Russian S~G just throws the theme into higher relief than anything else I've found. The necessity of mentally and physically repressing the majority of humanity in that particular society creates a very vivid backdrop for the particular theme. Just as the extreme minority population of humans, their incredible fragility, the degree of genetic modification done to most living things, and the existence of other sapients in Master & Servant brings the question of 'What is human?' into very high relief. 'Can' and 'can't' are relative, to me at least. Fitting square pegs in round holes is always possible given enough brute force and sometimes creates fascinating conflicts. I really didn't read scifi until I was in college. I was an au pair for a wealthy family (whom I still bless). They gave me a copy of Stranger in a Strange Land. For thirty years, Heinleins' views of the future world influenced my world view...my ethics, my competitiveness, my sexuality, even my faith. Then I discovered that, in general, I was identifying with his male protags, rather than his female characters. Oh well, I could have done worse than to emulate a Fair Witness or Thorbie or any of a dozen others. In the Golden Years, Heinlein preached against discrimination...taught tolerance...gave hope that endless love really did exist...cautioned against governmental control...attacked organized religion...described 'honor' and 'courage' and 'perseverance' in a way that almost anybody could understand...offended everyone who read him at one time or another about something or other... stimulated thought ...and sugar coated it all with adventure and excitement. I'm afraid one of the earlier influences in my life, on the issue of relationships at least, was _The Forbidden Tower_. Which might explain why certain concepts still are very difficult for me to figure out, like jealousy and monogamy. Most of the other SF/F I read when I was younger didn't deal much with relationships or even characters to the same degree, so it didn't really have as much of an effect on my own life. It was only much later I read Heinlein. Later on it was a whole plethora of writers, from Burroughs, PKD and Crowley through Varley, Forrester, Shakespeare and Blake who expanded my horizons, as it were. My tastes are quite catholic and getting worse as I age. Even negative examples are now grist for the mill. Actually I take a great deal more from non-fiction than fiction. If something catches my roving eye when I am reading, I go look up the sources on the phenomenon. I think the majority of people (perhaps not on this list, but I've often thought that SF readers are more intelligent that the average joe) expect doctors to give them antibiotics every time they have a cough or a sinus headache and far too many doctors are willing to oblige. A few years ago I worked with a woman who's pediatrician prescribed antibiotics for her 5 year old over the phone any time the child had a cold. Once when this woman had to take her daughter to another pediatrician and the doctor would not prescribe antibiotics for a cold, my coworker was furious. Came to work, told me about it, said the doctor was a horrible doctor and didn't know what she was doing, etc. - and this seems very common. My doctor doesn't do that. I've only been on antibiotics twice in the past several years, once for a sinus infection and once for bronchitis (actually, that was before I went to this doctor). Last time I went to him with bad sinus and chest congestion, he prescribed decongestants and an expectorant for 10 days first. Did the trick. (I go to a DO not an MD and I think that DOs in general are better doctors than MDs in general - more willing to sit and actually listen to the patient and to treat the whole person not just a symptom and less likely to throw medication at a patient and hope it shuts them up.)
