Episode #183: Freak Out (11/30/99)
Riyyh somehow manages to run into Lalique on the front porch of the inn... not entirely by coincidence, as it happens.
Riyyh: Oh, hello, Lalique. [smiles]
Riyyh: Did you have any luck at the shiltpron parlor?
Lalique is wearing her casual brown outfit today.
Lalique smiles at Riyyh.
Riyyh is wearing... well, let's not get started on that or we'll be here all day.
Lalique: Oh, yes. I'm scheduled to perform this evening. Hope the crowd will be in a generous mood.
Riyyh: That's wonderful.
Riyyh: Do you have a moment? I've been wanting to ask you....
Lalique glances around to see if anyone else is within earshot.
Lalique: Certainly, Sectuib.
Lalique moves closer.
Riyyh grew up assuming someone will always hear anything one says no matter how quietly, but automatically lowers his voice to be polite.
Riyyh: It will probably be best if you let me take down your field before too much longer.
Riyyh thinks he can find homes for most of the selyn here in town.
Lalique looks crestfallen.
Lalique: You haven't been able to arrange it, then?
Riyyh: Pardon me?
Lalique: Finding me a channel to transfer with?
Riyyh's eyes widen.
Riyyh definitely remembers promising no such thing.
Riyyh has a pretty good memory for weaseling out of things and how closely it was managed.
Lalique: Remember, we talked about it back in Rocky Gulch.
Riyyh: Oh... yes, in the restaurant.
Riyyh smiles.
Riyyh: Before Ruby came in.
Riyyh has managed to get over that - as long as he doesn't make the mistake of thinking about it.
Lalique: Yes. You said you understood.
Riyyh makes the mistake of thinking about it.
Riyyh: Oh, dear.
Riyyh tries not to look too depressed.
Riyyh: Yes, of course.
Lalique lets her control slip a little as her need to give begins to flavor the ambient.
Riyyh tries to be as kind and understanding as possible.
Lalique: I had the impression you thought you could help me.
Riyyh: Well, I am honored that you would trust me enough to seek my assistance in this way.
Riyyh: And I truly do understand what it must be like for you.
Lalique has no difficulty working up a pretty intense desire for transfer this close to a post-turnover First Order Channel.
Riyyh also isn't zlin-deaf; in fact he's more sensitive than most would suspect, given his low capacity.
Riyyh winces.
Riyyh: Certainly you'd be more comfortable low-field?
Riyyh: [gently]
Riyyh has to admit he likes the feeling of being wanted, though. Even if it isn't him specifically who is wanted, the feelings are there in his face.
Lalique's desire edges into desperation.
Lalique: ~~~ chronic aching yearning ~~~
Lalique: [voice trembling] Well, if that's all that's possible....
Riyyh feels great sympathy for her, and probably would have even if he was made out of granite, at that range.
Riyyh's hands dither in consternation.
Riyyh: But Lalique, [whiny voice reserved for Donors] I've already promised Nick, and who else would there be way out here?
Lalique: With all these outreach programs, isn't there a channel anywhere who requires a Donor?
Riyyh: These things are carefully balanced. I can't just go rearranging everybody's life partnerships.
Riyyh: Do be patient, it isn't so long until we will be at Naros again.
Riyyh thinks if she keeps this up it could be a very long 3 months though.
Lalique: Or... doesn't your House sponsor a disjunction program? I'd be happy to serve a junct. Anything real!
Riyyh: Lalique dear, we don't give disjuncting renSimes Gen transfer off a Donor. It just wouldn't be right.
Riyyh: Please, try to be calm.
Riyyh takes her hands, in an attempt to soothe her.
Lalique: Well, I wouldn't want to interfere with someone else's assignment.
Lalique is getting teary-eyed.
Lalique: You can take my field down, if you think that would be best.
Lalique: ~~ misery ~~
Riyyh: We don't have assignments, at Naros. [kindly] People choose one another for life.
Riyyh: Or try one another while searching for the one.
Riyyh thinks, or in some cases, keep sampling all their lives.
Lalique: I see.
Riyyh: But you will be so much more comfortable with your field taken down, really you will.
Lalique grits her teeth slightly.
Lalique: As you wish, Sectuib.
Riyyh files away the use of the word "Sectuib" as another worrisome piece of data to keep in mind in the weeks ahead.
