Episode #162: The Cat that Got the Comment (10/5/99)
Riyyh pops out the door of the Toro for Men lingerie shop, having made a few necessary purchases.
Riyyh may have to watch expenses, but he wouldn't be caught dead wearing any but the best, and will make up the cost in some other way.
Cammi spots her quarry from her hiding place in the trendy boutique next door.
Cammi hurries out, notepad at the ready.
Cammi: Sectuib Riyyh! Sectuib Riyyh!
Riyyh looks around in surprise.
Cammi: A moment of your time, please, for the Comment?
Cammi motions for her photographer to get set up and start snapping.
Cammi steps next to Riyyh and smiles for the camera.
Riyyh looks as if he'd rather anything but, but smiles gamely.
Riyyh: Well, I was just... oh, dear.
Cammi takes that as a "yes".
Cammi has become rather good at taking hemming and hawing as "yes", since she started this job.
Cammi: Could you comment on the riots caused by the members of the Urban Farming Program?
Cammi: I understand you posted bail for them?
Riyyh looks dreadfully embarrassed.
Riyyh: Yes, we did.
Riyyh: They're very young, very passionate about social change.
Cammi: I see. Can we expect more such... passion... in the future?
Cammi hopes so; she doesn't get paid for reporting nonevents.
Riyyh: I think they understand they went over the line this time.
Cammi's lips purse in disappointment.
Riyyh has been very patient in explaining this, while actively stroking up said young people's egos with excessive praise of their less inflammatory virtues.
Riyyh hopes it lasts until he has a chance to get through the harvest season at Naros, and then visit all the other cities with programs.
Cammi: You are alleged to be spending a great deal of time with Mayor Osca. Have you been negotiating a permanent solution with her?
Riyyh smiles a very different kind of smile... charming and wistful.
Riyyh looks ten kinds of cute when he smiles this way.
Cammi gestures to the photographer to immortalize it.
Riyyh flinches slightly but manages to hold the pose through several brilliant flash pops.
Cammi wonders if she can talk her colleague into making an enlargement for her to hang on her wall.
Riyyh: It's more a... smoothing over of the current difficulties. [explains]
Riyyh: Public relations, if you will.
Riyyh means this more literally than anybody knows, having discovered the Mayor is a closet exhibitionist.
Cammi's eyes widen, and she scribbles a note or three.
Cammi: Sectuib, your name has also been linked with the notorious rogue Donor Nick Reckage. Do you plan to steal him from the Tecton by offering him a place as your Donor?
Riyyh's smile changes again, becoming gentle, and generous, and loving, at the mention of his son.
Cammi's photographer gets this pose down, too.
Riyyh: Nick will always have a place at Naros, if he chooses it.
Cammi: Has he decided not to pledge the Tecton, then?
Riyyh: You would have to ask him. [apologetic]
Riyyh manages to give the impression of sincerely wishing he had a better answer for her... which isn't far from the truth, since he'd kind of like to know himself.
Cammi pouts, in an attractive sort of way.
Cammi is debating ditching the photographer and trying for a very up-close and personal interview.
Cammi's eyes stray to the packages that Riyyh is carrying.
Cammi has always liked guys that undressed well.
Riyyh smiles at Cammi.
Cammi smiles back.
Cammi: Were your purchases here today in honor of a special occasion?
Cammi would be willing to help remedy the situation, if not.
Riyyh: It wasn't when I went in.
Riyyh manages to make the centuries old joke sound very inviting, with his own special blend of innocent charm.
Cammi chuckles in appreciation, then glances at her photographer.
Cammi: Why don't you go and develop those, dear.
Cammi has developments of her own to pursue.
Cammi turns back to Riyyh.
Riyyh offers her his elbow.
Cammi doesn't--quite--lick her chops in feline fashion.
Cammi places her hand on Riyyh's arm.
Cammi wonders if Riyyh really is as good as his reputation makes him.
Riyyh looks like the cat that ate the canary as he escorts the Comment reporter away from Toro for Men.
Riyyh: ~~ grin ~~
