Sime/Gen Roleplaying: Householding Naros Scenario
Episode #60: Take Me To Your Lathe (11/14/98)
Hero bounces out to the gates, having spotted the wagon coming from the village bearing somebody from the train station.
Hero: Hi!!!!
Hero: ~~greetings~~
Hero bounces up to the wagon before it's even stopped.
Hero: Where's all your stuff? Do you want a hand! What's your name? I'm Hero.
Hero: ~exuberant~
Sinda is sore from the wagon trip.
Sinda: Hero. Hello. This is Naros?
Hero: Yes.
Sinda: ~relief~
Hero: Are you going to be new?
Hero stares frankly at Sinda.
Sinda gets out of the wagon, once stopped, and stretches.
Hero thinks that all of Naros' young men are going to be totally hot for Sinda's bod, mostly because she's not related.
Sinda: I hope to be.
Hero: Wow!!
Hero: Where's your stuff, want me to help carry it?
Hero: ~eager~
Sinda: It's on top. I can manage.
Hero: Oh.
Sinda has muscles, a lot for a Sime.
Sinda: But if you want to, you can get that.
Sinda indicates a thick cloth bag.
Hero watches as Sinda retrieves the bag.
Sinda: It is not too heavy, but it is awkward.
Sinda: Can you manage?
Hero: Sure! ~gung-ho~
Sinda lifts off two other bags, and hoists them over her shoulders.
Hero picks up the bag and staggers back in through Naros' big main gate.
Hero: Follow me!
Sinda follows.
Hero's path describes a drunken course as the bag proves rather a lot for a 12 year old female Gen.
Sinda: This place is bigger than I thought!
Hero: [puff puff] Oh really?
Hero: Where are you from?
Sinda: Would you like to trade? You could carry this one?
Hero heads determinedly [and intermittently] toward the administration building.
Hero: No no! [pant pant pant] I'm just fine!!
Hero: It's really light!
Hero: ~total lie~
Sinda: Let's rest for a moment. These two are heavy!
Hero puts the cloth bag down and immediately trips over it when her hands fail to let go of the straps.
Hero: Oof!
Sinda unslings her bags, stops, and looks around.
Hero giggles and jumps to her feet again.
Sinda: Careful.
Hero: Here's all the houses. That one over there, [points to a big one near the edge of the fields] is Sectuib's.
Sinda: Wow.
Sinda: I'm from Daishten.
Hero: Where's that???
Hero: Hey, why do you have one red button and the rest blue on your shirt?
Hero: You have big muscles!! ~impressed~
Hero: How long was your trip?
Hero: Are you like a blacksmith or something?
Hero chatters on while bouncing about Sinda examining everything around them.
Sinda: I'm a joiner. I make things out of wood.
Hero: Oh.
Hero: Come on, I want to show you to Sectuib!
Sinda: Good. Here, you take this one.
Hero jerks on the handles of the bag, swings it over in a big arc and almost smashes herself to the ground with it before tottering off in the direction of a large two story building,
Hero: Oh this one is much lighter!!
Hero is actually bouncing a bit, causing everything in the bag to get rearranged.
Sinda takes the other bags, and accompanies Hero.
Sinda is glad that bag is just clothing and other soft stuff.
Sinda: So, how do you like it here?
Sinda: Have you lived here long?
Hero: I was born here.
Hero: Almost everybody was born here, except the new people.
Hero: Like you!
Hero grins and stumps up the stairs.
Hero: This is the Admin building where the offices are.
Hero: The Medical Center is over there [points to another building]
Hero: Come in!
Sinda follows Hero, ducking out of habit (Sinda is tall)
Hero leads Sinda up some stairs and toward Riyyh's office.
Hero: You'll love Sectuib Riyyh. Everybody does.
Hero nods.
Hero: Except my mom.
Sinda tries to figure out how to respond to that and decides silence is probably the best response.
Riyyh is in his office doing some paperwork.
Riyyh had a bit of advance warning on their approach due to 1) the excellent vantage point of his office window and 2) Hero's big mouth.
Sinda: Sectuib Riyyh?
Hero: Hi!!!!!!!
Hero bounces into Riyyh's office.
Riyyh looks up.
Riyyh winces a bit as Hero does her thing to the ambient.
Riyyh makes a mental note to have another word with Wolfa about that.
Hero: It's Sinda!! She's a Joiner!! She comes from Daishten! She has one red button, look!!
Hero: Can we keep her?
Hero: ~all excited~
Sinda: I've just arrived from Householding Daishten.
Riyyh: Hero, [gently] I believe Wolfa is looking for you.
Riyyh looks at the door.
Hero: Oh!!
Hero: ~damn~
Hero runs out.
Riyyh smiles apologetically at Sinda.
Riyyh: Welcome to Naros.
Riyyh: Please, have a seat. Would you like any tea? Water? Food?
Sinda: Tea would be nice. Thank you.
Sinda: It was a dusty ride.
Riyyh gets up and goes to fetch some tea for Sinda.
Riyyh: We produce it ourselves, here.
Riyyh has been especially grateful for the Naros gourmet teas after his recent, ill-fated road trip.
Riyyh hands it to her.
Riyyh smiles at Sinda.
Sinda takes the tea, sips to test its temperature, then takes a large gulp.
Sinda: It is very good.
Riyyh is an aging, yet well-preserved (mostly due to extreme effort on his part) First Order channel with long, silvery hair and a Sectuibly, or shall we say Fatherly, aura of kindness and benevolence.
Riyyh beams, pleased by the compliment.
Riyyh returns to his seat.
Riyyh: I trust your trip was uneventful?
Sinda: Yes. Long. Bumpy. But uneventful.
Sinda is tall, Sime-thin but muscular, as if she was used to physical activity even before changeover, with a confident, direct air.
Riyyh: We are very pleased at your arrival. Work for you has been piling up... but of course, it can wait a few days while you rest and get oriented.
Riyyh smiles sheepishly.
Sinda: I've been looking forward to getting back to work.
Riyyh: I'm afraid Jalos and Fennel, our carver and our woodsman, have been asking about you every day.
Sinda: Perhaps tomorrow or the next day?
Riyyh: That would be perfect.
Sinda: Is there already a lathe here?
Sinda: And a shop?
Sinda: Or will I have to set up my own?
Sinda: I brought most of my tools, and can make the others.
Riyyh: Naros has been self-sufficient for three hundred years. [smiles] However, if there is anything you require which is not found in our worksheds, please let me know.
Sinda: Good.
Riyyh may be exaggerating somewhat as to how self-sufficient Naros is, but not by much.
Sinda: Thank you.
Sinda assumes that Riyyh would know about woodworking, because Sinda knows about it.
Riyyh has actually never lifted a finger in physical labor in his life, although he has watched others do so.
Sinda: Is there anything you want to know about me?
Riyyh: I do have your letter of application, which I have read several times.
Riyyh looks about on his desk and manages to locate it under some others.
Sinda: Yes.
Riyyh: You appear to be an excellent choice for Naros, although I was curious on one point....
Sinda: Yes?
Riyyh: You didn't mention why you want to leave Daishten.
Sinda: I am an excellent craftswoman. I was trained by Jyslan ambrov Daishten.
Sinda: But she also trained several others.
Sinda: Jyslan herself still runs the woodcraft shop at Daishten and I hope will run it for many years to come.
Sinda: But I wanted to go somewhere where I had a chance to grow, take on more responsibility.
Sinda: One other thing.
Sinda: I'm not quite sure how to say this,
Sinda: But at Daishten many of the people I dated....
Riyyh listens attentively.
Riyyh has many many years of practice at appearing totally attentive.
Sinda: Would have left me in a second if a channel so much as looked at them.
Sinda: No offense intended.
Riyyh considers.
Riyyh: I see.
Sinda: I thought I might get a bit more respect, both for my skills and myself.
Sinda: At a place where my skills are needed, not extra.
Riyyh: Well, you are certainly welcome. Your skills are required, as we lost our master joiner, and our young people are very interested in dating new people, regardless of larity.
Riyyh: ~kindly~
Sinda: That is what I heard, which is part of why I applied.
Sinda: And this beautiful countryside would make me want to stay anyway.
Sinda: You have such a variety of trees!
Riyyh nods.
Riyyh smiles.
Riyyh: The snows will arrive soon. But even bare, they are beautiful.
Riyyh: Do you feel up to a tour, or would you prefer to rest for a while first?
Riyyh: I would be glad to take a moment to give you a bit of an orientation personally.
Riyyh is rather famous for this actually.
Riyyh: ~generous~
Sinda: I would love a tour. But can we start with the room I'll be staying in, so I can drop off my things?
Sinda: And I'd like to meet Jalos and Fennel, did I get their names right?
Riyyh: Of course.
Riyyh: Yes, those are their names. We can see if they're available when we go by the worksheds.
Riyyh smiles and rises.
Sinda gathers two bags, then stares at the third.
Sinda: Oh!
Riyyh: Allow me?
Riyyh picks up the third, augmenting to handle it.
Riyyh has no delusions of macho whatsoever.
Sinda: Thank you!
Riyyh: It is my pleasure. ~sincere~
Sinda: ~slightly embarrassed that the Sectuib is carrying her bag.~
Sinda: ~especially when she could handle it herself, mostly~
Sinda: Which way?
Riyyh leads the way, out the backside of the administration building.
Sinda follows.
