Meg ambles along the Promenade, a very pleasant shopping district in Capitol.

Meg doesn't usually get out shopping very much, but this is an errand of mercy.

Lalique trails after Meg, thoroughly enjoying their afternoon on the town.

Lalique has a shopping bag crammed full of purchases. She is discovering that a Donor's salary is a fringe benefit she wouldn't mind growing accustomed to.

Meg catches Lalique smiling and smiles back.

Meg is concerned that adjusting to Tecton life has been very difficult for the former rogue. She is happy to be of help to the displaced and unfortunate.

Meg has also been known to carefully catch spiders that invade her bedroom in a handkerchief and gently place them out the window.

Lalique is amazed that a Donor of Meg ambrov Chanel's reputation and background is willing to take an interest in her welfare.

Lalique, as usual, is willing to take whatever she can get.

Lalique peers in the window of a storefront that features beautiful imported scarves.

Lalique: Oh, come look at this!

Meg comes to the window.

Meg thinks the scarves, with their metallic thread and brilliant colors, are somewhat gaudy for her taste.

Meg: They're very cheerful, aren't they?

Lalique: I used to do this number on-stage, with a kind of dance where you....

Lalique doubts a description of her dance of many veils would improve her image.

Lalique: Anyway, I would have loved to have a few like those.

Meg smiles gently and touches her shoulder.

Basard has been told that Lalique frequents the Promenade. She has never gone in much for pretties and frills. She wonders what anyone gets out of them. A waste of good money. Her contempt increases as she waits for her prey. Checking to see if Gaspar is in place, she spies Lalique with another woman.

Meg: You're in a different line of work now.

Meg: They are lovely, but your clients will be more comfortable if you dress conservatively.

Lalique: I understand.

Lalique: Truly I do.

Lalique: Your advice is so helpful.

Lalique: I want people to see me as a Tecton Donor in every way.

Meg laughs.

Meg: You worry too much about how you appear to others.

Meg: Just be yourself and everyone will love you.

Lalique: Just be myself?

Lalique sighs.

Basard realizes dealing with two is going to be more difficult. She will have to wait and watch closely.

Lalique: I wish it were so simple.

Lalique: But, what you see is what you get, as they say in the biz.

Meg: Now look at this store here.

Meg: What lovely tablecloths!

Lalique: Oh, yes. They'd make the whole room just light up.

Basard gets Gaspar's attention and points to the two Donors, giving him the wait and watch sign.

Gaspar signals back that he is ready. He holds the carriage with the two black horses steady around the street corner.

Meg: Max used to complain when I redecorated, but I've taught him better.

Basard motions for Gaspar to get out of the carriage and flank the two women.

Meg: I don't think I can leave that behind.

Gaspar locks the horses' reins in place and slips down from the carriage box.

Gaspar moves to the corner, pretending to be looking in the shop windows.

Meg: That tablecloth would make me happy, and if I'm happy, Max is happy.

Basard moves in closer, pretending to look at the frills and finery. She see Gaspar take up his position.

Lalique smiles.

Lalique: It must be nice to be married to the one you love.

Gaspar moves closer to the two Gens.

Meg goes into the shop with the tablecloth.

Basard is now close enough. She signals Gaspar to be ready.

Gaspar is prepared to make his move.

Meg holds the door for Lalique.

Basard see the perfect opportunity and signals Gaspar. She grabs Lalique from behind and pins her arms behind her before she can enter the shop.

Basard: Now!

Basard pushes the stunned woman down the street toward Gaspar.

Gaspar shoves a rag doused with chloroform over Lalique's face.

Lalique: ARGHskkdk. . .. .

Basard picks up Lalique bodily and heads for the carriage.

Meg: ~~shock and surprise~~

Basard runs for the carriage and manages to get the now limp Gen into it with Gaspar's help.

Meg: Help!!! Stop!!!

Gaspar boosts the woman inside and slams the door.

Meg runs after the two kidnappers.

Meg: ~~DANGER~~

Basard jumps into the carriage and shoves the Donor over into the back and looks around for Gaspar.

Gaspar leaps up into the carriage box and grabs the reins.

Basard: Go!

Meg blares a nageric alarm that can be heard by every Sime within a mile's radius.

Basard looks out and sees people gathering.

Basard: Move!!

Gaspar thwacks the horses backs with the reins and they take off like a shot.

Meg tries to strike Gaspar with her handbag to stop his escape, but hits the horse instead.

Gaspar lets the two black horses gallop full out as they head down the main road out of town.

Lalique lies unconscious in the back seat of the carriage.

Basard looks back at the now receding crowd. They aren't out of trouble yet there are Simes everywhere and things could get ugly fast.

Meg: [voice rising forlornly way behind the vanishing carriage] Help! Police!

Gaspar whips the horses into even greater efforts.

Monty, proud in his police uniform, hears the commotion and heads for the Promenade.

Basard is looking around and trying to see in every direction at once. It would be very useful to be able to zlin right now.

Gaspar turns off the main road and onto a side path that heads through cultivated fields.

Monty: What's going on here!

People tell the policeman about the abduction.

Gaspar feels the carriage turn a corner on only two wheels.

Gaspar yanks on the horses' bits to get them firmly under control.

Monty mounts his stalwart chestnut mare and takes off after the culprits.

Gaspar sees that they are now entering the forest. The path twists and turns.

Basard looks into the back seat to be sure that the Donor is still in one piece. The contract is for healthy merchandise, not damaged goods.

Lalique moans.

Basard: Take it a bit easier in here. There is going to be a path through the woods on the left. Look sharp for it.

Gaspar: Okay, boss!

Gaspar reins the horses in a bit.

Monty gallops down the main road.

Lalique's fingers wriggle weakly.

Basard is glad Gaspar is the best driver for the money around. She eyes Lalique and hopes that the drugs don't wear off too soon. It would be a shame to have to hit her to keep her quiet.

Gaspar sees the cut-off and makes the sharp turn flawlessly.

Basard: You just earned your pay.

Monty reaches the outskirts of the district where there is a big hill. He sees no sign of the black carriage.

Gaspar knows this road is a straight arrow and whips the horses up as fast as they can go.

Basard: Good man!

Monty looks in all directions and spots an old Gen lady on a porch swing.

Monty: Ma'am? Excuse me, Ma'am?

Gramma: What is it, sonny?

Monty: Did you see a big black carriage go by here? With two black horses?

Gramma: What?

Gramma: Well, that's a nice horse you've got.

Monty: Did you see two black horses?

Gramma: Uh, no sonny. Nothin' like that.

Monty doubles back, puzzled.

Basard hopes to keep the pace and is looking sharp for the well hidden path that turns up into a stream to the hideout.

Gaspar stands up on the carriage seat and looks behind.

Gaspar doesn't see any sign of pursuit.

Basard: Anybody back there?

Gaspar: I think we lost them!

Gaspar: Want to change vehicles or head straight for the hide-out?

Lalique moans again.

Basard: No, let's head straight for the hide-out because little miss sunshine is waking up.

Lalique: Oh, shen!

Basard decides to punch her in the head.

Lalique punches back, her reflexes automatic after years on the street.

Lalique is pretty uncoordinated, though, and doesn't manage more than a bop on the nose.

Basard is not expecting a Tecton Donor to fight back. Now she is PO'ed and punches the Donor hard in the face.

Lalique's nose spurts blood. This has the effect of rousing her somewhat.

Basard: Where the bloody shen is the knock out stuff?!

Lalique: Shidoni-be-flayed maggot-eating plague-infested golifards!

Gaspar hands the bottle of chloroform back to Basard.

Lalique claws at Basard's face with long fingernails.

Lalique: Thermonuclear pond scum!

Lalique's mind isn't focusing very well.

Basard has no intention of exchanging blows with this idiot Gen. She doesn't even try to put it on a cloth, she throws the chloroform in the Donor's face.

Gaspar spots the turn-off and does another one of his trademark carriage turns on a dime.

Lalique: Gahkkklsl hthksk alkeks!!!

Lalique takes a splash of chloroform full in the face and collapses immediately.

Basard watches the chloroform take effect making sure to hold her own breath.

Chloroform fumes insidiously rise and fill the carriage interior.

Gaspar runs the carriage right off the road and maneuvers the vehicle down into the course of a shallow stream bed.

Chloroform gathers in a cloud around Basard waiting for him to take a breath.

Basard realizes that throwing the chloroform was a very bad idea.

Basard sticks her head out the window and nearly loses it to a passing tree.

Chloroform tickles Basard's nose.

Basard decides that the window is a bad idea also.

Chloroform rises up out of the carriage interior and begins to waft in the direction of Gaspar.

Gaspar begins to feel a little dizzy.

Gaspar: What the hell are you doing with that stuff, taking a shower?

Basard is trying to figure out how not to live without breathing. She tries to put her head out the other window and has an intimate encounter with a branch.

Basard: Just keep driving!

Gaspar stands up on the carriage seat, trying to get above the fumes.

Basard: Do you see the hide-out?

Gaspar is rather precariously perched, even without the gas attack.

Basard thinks this is a stupid question because it wouldn't be much of a hide-out if you could see it. The fumes are getting to her.

Gaspar: We're almost-- Yah!!

Gaspar goes flying off the carriage.

Basard: What!?

Gaspar lands in a bush by the edge of the stream with a crunching sound.

Basard sees Gaspar go by the window on his way down.

Horses notice that they are no longer being whipped.

Horses also notice that no one is yanking their bits.

Basard tries to think of what to do next. The fumes are making that impossible.

Horses are tired and thirsty, so decide this would be a good time to stop for a drink.

Horses stand in the middle of the rippling streambed and the carriage halts.

Basard notices the carriage slowing. She wants to make it go faster but can't remember why.

Gaspar struggles weakly in the bushes. Thorns tear at his face and arms.

Basard fold slowly into a fetal position and goes to sleep.

Gaspar struggles clear of the thorn bushes. He is cut, scratched and miserable.

Gaspar says words that singe the ears of all the little singing birdies.

Gaspar stumbles wearily after the carriage.

Gaspar opens the carriage doors and considers the peacefully sleeping Basard and Lalique.

Gaspar: Women!

Gaspar grabs some rope and ties Lalique up securely.

Gaspar positions Basard in the front of the carriage near the open windows.

Gaspar climbs back up on the box and gets the horses back under control.

Gaspar finally reaches the hide-out--an old farm house with an elderly couple sitting on the porch.

Basard breaths in clean air with the very distinct fragrance of horse.

Basard slowly returns to the land of the living.

Basard: Let's get moving!

Gaspar: We're there!

Gaspar: Have a nice nap?

Basard: Uh, um... Yeah.

Gaspar: I wrapped up your little surprise package.

Basard has a splitting headache.

Gaspar: But the ribbon is extra. Remember that when it comes time to pay off.

Basard looks in the back seat to see the Donor all trussed up.

Lalique is still out cold.

Basard hoping that Gaspar doesn't tell anyone about her nap. A thing like that could ruin her reputation.

Gaspar is perfectly happy to keep silent if the customer's a good tipper.

Basard knows this is going to cost her more than it should to keep Gaspar quiet.

Basard: Good job. Now let's get her inside and the carriage under wraps.

Gaspar: Sure, boss.

Gaspar opens the door and grabs Lalique by the legs.

Gaspar thinks, "not bad for an old broad."

Gaspar is young enough to think that anyone over 22 is old.

Basard grabs Lalique's shoulders and gets out of the carriage.

Gaspar moves the unconscious Gen into the house with Basard's help.

Old folks pretend they don't see anything at all.

Basard: We'll take her in and put her down. Then I got to go see a man about some money.

Gaspar helps Basard move Lalique into a storage shed behind the house.

Lalique is beginning to revive slightly now that she is out of the fumes.

Lalique gurgles pitifully.

Basard: Gag her! I don't want the neighbors to get upset.

Basard finds a dirty rag on the floor to use.

Gaspar ties a handkerchief around her mouth so the gag won't come out.

Gaspar notices that the walls of the shed are surprisingly thick and well insulated.

Gaspar: She ought to be okay here.

Gaspar leaves the shed to put the horse and carriage up in the barn.

Lalique struggles feebly against her bonds.

Basard smiles viciously at Lalique. She is thinking of the money she will collect for this little job and how to spend it.

Lalique lashes out in all directions with her field, but there aren't any Simes in range to be slammed.

Basard walks out of the shed and slams the door and locks it tight.
